You've just received a stunning bouquet or hand-picked some wild blooms to place in your favorite heirloom vase. Now comes the million-dollar question: how do you make your flowers last longer?
At The Hive, our floral and gift shop in Newburyport, one of the most common questions we hear is, "How do I keep my flowers alive?" Today, we're sharing a few of our favorite tips, straight from our design bench to your home, so your arrangement can stay vibrant and beautiful for up to 10 days, and sometimes even longer.
1. It Starts at the Flower Shop
Not all blooms are created equal. While some flowers, like peonies and hydrangeas, steal the show with their charm, they can also be more delicate and short-lived.
Here’s the behind-the-scenes magic: what your florist does before you receive your bouquet makes a big difference.
At The Hive, the moment fresh flowers arrive, we begin a process known as flower conditioning. This includes:
-
Inspecting every stem
-
Stripping away most of the leaves
-
Cutting each stem at an angle
-
Placing them in clean, room-temperature water
Conditioning helps reduce bacteria and allows flowers to hydrate efficiently, two essential steps for extending their life.
2. Why We Remove the Leaves
When it comes to leaves, less is more. While every part of the stem draws up water, excess foliage can slow the process. By removing most of the leaves, more water goes directly to the petals, right where it is needed most.

3. Always Cut Stems at an Angle
When refreshing your arrangement at home, cut the stems at a diagonal.
A slanted cut increases the surface area for water absorption and prevents the stem from sitting flat against the bottom of the vase, which can block water intake.
Some specialty blooms need a little extra care. Hydrangeas benefit from a small vertical slit at the base so they can drink more deeply. Poppies respond well to a quick sear at the stem base, which stops them from releasing sap that can harm neighboring flowers.

4. What’s in That Flower Food Packet?
That little sachet that comes with your bouquet is more powerful than it looks. It contains a simple but effective trio:
-
Sugar to nourish the flowers
-
Bleach to prevent bacteria
-
Acid to lower the pH and improve water uptake
If you don’t have flower food on hand, you can make your own with a pinch of sugar, a few drops of bleach, and a splash of lemon juice.
5. Check and Change the Water Daily
This step is easy to forget, but it makes a big difference. When you arrive home, check the water level right away. Transportation can cause it to spill or shift, leaving your flowers thirsty.
Top it off gently by pouring water along the inside of the vase so the petals stay dry. Then, try to make it a daily habit to refresh the water completely or top it off while keeping the vase clean and clear.

6. Keep Them Cool and Out of Direct Sunlight
While flowers bring warmth and beauty to a space, they last longer in a cooler environment. Keep your arrangement away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and radiators to slow the wilting process.
A bright windowsill may look lovely, but a cooler spot will help your bouquet stay fresh for days longer.
